I believe God has been at work throughout your story. Clues to your purpose often appear in the experiences that shaped you, your spiritual gifts, the abilities that bring you life, and other characteristics God has woven into who you are. The people who influenced you and the concerns you cannot easily set aside may also tell you something important.

Much of this material developed over several decades as I helped hundreds of emerging leaders look carefully at their lives and put words around their purpose. It also reflects more than five decades of my own life with God. The book will not hand you a generic answer. It will help you examine your own story and notice what may have been present all along.

The eight-week process, which includes an all-new spiritual gifts assessment, leads to a clearer understanding of how God has shaped you and the purposes He may be inviting you to pursue. My hope is that you will recognize His work in your story and move forward with greater confidence.

Becoming the Leader Others Need When the Storm Arrives

When people are anxious and the path ahead is unclear, they look closely at the person leading them. They need more than quick answers or a strong voice. They need someone they can trust.

The lighthouse became a helpful picture for me. It stands on a solid foundation, provides light, warns of danger, and helps others find their bearings. It does all of this while the storm is still raging.

Lighthouse Leadership grows out of a forty-one-year marketplace career, including almost thirteen years as CEO of Colorado Springs Utilities. The lessons came through real decisions, people who helped me, mistakes I made, and years of carrying responsibility. Many of them became especially visible during the Waldo Canyon Fire.

The book explores ten qualities: Listening, Integrity, Guidance, Hope, Trustworthiness, Humility, Ownership, Unity, Steadiness, and Execution. Each chapter includes stories, questions for reflection, and ways to strengthen the quality being considered.

I wrote it for anyone who has been entrusted with leading people and wants to become the kind of leader others can depend upon when the way forward is not clear.

Toward a Whole Heart

My Journey into a Deeper Life with God

For much of my life, I knew how to work hard, solve problems, lead, and carry responsibility. I also sincerely loved God. When retirement brought a quieter season, I began to recognize how often even my life with God had been connected to what I needed to accomplish next.

This book follows one inward thread through childhood, faith, marriage, fatherhood, leadership, and retirement. It tells how God has met me through the people and experiences that shaped me, including the places I learned to protect, and how He has continued to draw me toward a heart more free to receive love and give itself away.

I am writing honestly about learning to be loved before proving my usefulness, recognizing old reactions sooner, and turning back more quickly to God and to others. I hope the book feels like an unhurried conversation and helps readers notice God's faithfulness in their own stories.
