A life shaped by faith, leadership, and the people who helped me grow.

I grew up in a home where faith was practiced. I would have called myself a Christian, though I did not yet know God personally. In the summer of 1973, I saw something genuine in my sisters Debbie and Patty—the quiet evidence of a God they truly knew. Their lives stirred a desire in me, and near the end of that summer, I gave my life to Jesus.

The trajectory of my life was radically changed in one day.

That decision changed the direction of my life, and I am still learning what it means to live in God's love and follow where He leads. My path began in engineering. For a season, I stepped away from school to explore the possibility of Bible college. When that door did not open, I returned to engineering. In time, I understood that God was not asking me to divide ministry from the marketplace. He could use every part of my life. God wastes nothing.

I spent more than forty-one years in engineering, operations, and marketplace leadership. My work included municipal engineering, consulting, and service at Los Alamos before I joined Colorado Springs Utilities, where I eventually served more than thirteen years as chief executive officer.

As CEO, I was entrusted with approximately 2,000 employees serving more than 500,000 people and three military installations. I am a registered professional engineer, but the most important insights from those years were about people: asking questions, listening carefully, telling the truth, developing others, stewarding trust, and remaining steady when circumstances become uncertain.

The Waldo Canyon Fire was one of many defining experiences. It reinforced something experience had already been teaching me: leadership is not primarily a position. It is a responsibility to help people find their way through circumstances they did not expect and cannot navigate alone.

Along the way, I have also shared leadership lessons at the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado College, Pikes Peak State College, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, the University of Colorado Boulder, and in churches and community gatherings.

Much of what I now hope to pass on began as a gift from someone else. Certain people saw more in me than I could yet see in myself. They listened, asked questions, told me the truth, and stayed near long enough for their investment to become part of my life.

Paul Stanley mentored me for nearly twenty years and showed me the power of steady, relational investment. Other leaders, colleagues, friends, pastors, and family members have also shaped my thinking and my life.

Their example is one reason I care so deeply about investing in emerging leaders. Wisdom is not meant to end with the person who received it. It should be lived, tested, and eventually passed on.

Alongside my professional life, I have always been drawn to mentoring, teaching, worship, and helping people recognize what God may be doing in their lives. I served for about a decade as a worship leader and have remained involved in churches, small groups, community organizations, and one-to-one conversations.

My wife, Denise, has shared this journey with me for more than thirty-eight years. Together we have raised our children, Elise and Jonathan. We discovered that the first places our values must become real are at home and in our closest relationships.

My primary purpose is to know God intimately and to love and enjoy Him forever. Out of the strength of that relationship, I want to love others, represent God faithfully, and make Him known to the world around me.

My unique purpose is to lead and to awaken passion and destiny in others—to speak words of life, help people understand the patterns of God's activity in their stories, and teach, coach, and mentor them to walk in wisdom and strategy.

I retired from full-time marketplace leadership in 2018. Today I write, teach, mentor, consult, and make my accumulated work available. At this point, I am more interested in leaving something useful behind than in building a platform. I want to preserve the insights, stories, and resources that may help others make a wise decision, understand their purpose, lead responsibly, or invest more intentionally in someone else.
